The sector median covers every company in the sector on the US market, loss-making ones included.
Expedia sells other people's hotels, flights and rentals — a marketplace living on booking commission.
The group runs several sites with different purposes: mass hotel booking, flight search, and renting homes from private owners. The company owns neither rooms nor aircraft and takes a percentage of the transaction, so its economics depend on booking volume and on what it costs to acquire a traveller.
The largest expense is search engine advertising: the marketplace pays to be seen before the very hotel it sells. Hence the constant fight for the share of direct visits and for the app instead of search. Risks: a competitor with a larger share, hotels' own direct selling and travel's sensitivity to the economy. The company pays no dividend but buys back heavily.
