United Airlines is a network carrier with strong international routes and hubs in the largest cities.
The model rests on connecting hubs: a passenger from a small city flies into a hub and onward from there, which fills long-haul flights that would not pay for themselves point to point. International routes, above all across the Pacific and to Europe, earn the most per seat.
The industry is capital-intensive and cyclical: aircraft are bought for decades while demand shifts within a quarter. Stability comes from premium cabins and the loyalty programme, whose miles are bought by the card-issuing bank — income that barely depends on how many people fly. Risks: fuel prices, union agreements, aircraft delivery schedules and airport congestion. The company pays no dividend.
