The sector median covers every company in the sector on the US market, loss-making ones included.
FedEx moves parcels by air and road — a network that cannot be run half full.
Network economics make costs nearly fixed: the aircraft departs on schedule regardless of load, and the sorting hub runs all night. Profit is therefore acutely sensitive to volume: a small rise in parcels produces a disproportionately large rise in profit, and a decline does the same in reverse.
Air express is the most expensive and most cyclical part: when trade slows, shippers downgrade to ground service, which is cheaper and slower. The company has spent years merging two previously separate networks into one to cut cost.
A separate factor is the loss of the postal contract and Amazon's growing self-delivery. Fuel and pilot and driver wages are the main cost lines. FedEx pays a dividend and buys back stock.
