RBC Bearings makes bearings and bushings for aircraft and industrial machinery.
An aircraft bearing sits in an assembly where failure is unacceptable, so a supplier is qualified by the airframe maker and written into the design documents. After that, replacing it means recertifying the assembly, which is almost never done.
Revenue follows both new aircraft production and the flying fleet's hours: worn parts are replaced at maintenance. The industrial half is bearings for heavy equipment and actuation acquired together with a large specialist business. Risks: airframe assembly schedules, the industrial cycle and steel prices. Aerospace now supplies most of the profit, and its share has been raised deliberately over the past decade. The company pays no dividend.
