Colgate-Palmolive sells toothpaste and household products — categories bought regardless of the economy.
Oral care is the base: market share is large in many countries, and a brand decades old justifies a premium over a retailer's private label. Volumes grow slowly with population, while revenue grows on price and on shoppers trading up.
A substantial share of sales sits in emerging markets, where consumption per person is lower and rises with incomes. The flip side is currency risk: devaluation in host countries directly reduces dollar revenue, and raising local prices cannot be done immediately.
A separate line is Hill's pet nutrition, growing faster than the core business and at better margins. Risks: raw material costs, private-label competition and currencies. Colgate is a dividend aristocrat with a very long record of increases.
