Charter Communications runs cable internet into homes — and is losing subscribers for the first time in a long while.
A cable network is an asset with very high entry costs: running cable to every home in a district costs billions, and a second operator usually does not do it. Hence a position that allowed price rises for decades. Television became a loss-making burden, but internet remains profitable.
The turn came from two things: home internet over mobile networks, which carriers sell more cheaply, and fibre being laid to the same homes. The company answers with its own mobile offer riding on someone else's network and by combining with another cable operator for scale. Risks: subscriber losses, debt and the capital cost of upgrading the network.
