Lululemon sells sportswear that people also wear outside the gym, and does it through its own shops.
The brand grew out of yoga and created a category where technical fabric and fit justify a price above sportswear's mass market. Sales go direct — through owned shops and the website — rather than through department stores, so the mark-up is higher and customer data stays with the company.
The vulnerability is that clothing is fashion: the category the brand created attracted competitors, the home market matured, and growth has to be found abroad, above all in China. Assortment mistakes show immediately here, because inventory ages faster than it sells. Risks: fashion, competition and tariffs. The company pays no dividend but buys back stock.
