General Mills makes cereal, snacks and pet food — and grows where breakfast does not.
Breakfast cereal is a mature category in slow decline: shoppers move to quicker and higher-protein options. The company holds share through advertising and flavour refreshes, but there is nothing to reverse the structural trend, and retailers' own labels press from below.
The growth bet was made in pet food: a premium brand bought for a large sum works on the same demographic story as the whole pet care industry. The category is more profitable than cereal and grows faster. Risks: grain and packaging prices, retailer pressure and the discretionary nature of premium pet food in a downturn. The company pays a high dividend.
