Launched in 2011 as a lighter copy of Bitcoin: Charlie Lee took the same code and changed the parameters — a block every two and a half minutes instead of ten, a cap of 84 million coins instead of 21 million, Scrypt mining instead of SHA-256. The intent was faster payment confirmation and mining that stayed within reach of ordinary hardware for longer.
The maximum supply is capped at 84.0 M LTC.
Litecoin is grouped under: Smart Contract Platform, Proof of Work (PoW), Privacy, Infrastructure.

Litecoin is ranked #23 by market capitalisation, at 4.95B $. Market capitalisation is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with both — a coin can climb the ranking without its price rising, simply by issuing more.
77.7 M LTC are in circulation, which is 92.5 % of the declared maximum. The remainder enters the market on the schedule written into the protocol, and until it does, the circulating figure is what market capitalisation is computed from — not the cap.
Over the last twelve months the price of LTC fell by 46.8 %. That is the change of the quote itself and says nothing about what comes next: crypto drawdowns of tens of percent within a year are ordinary, not exceptional.
Litecoin is the native coin of its own blockchain: transaction fees in that network are paid in it, and its issuance is set by the protocol rather than by a contract on someone else's chain.
The network has run without interruption longer than almost any other and has spent decades as a proving ground: several protocol changes were tested here before reaching Bitcoin. The block reward halves on the same principle but on its own schedule, and an optional extension was added later that lets amounts and addresses be concealed.
In practice its use comes down to transfers and settlement between trading venues: an application ecosystem of its own never took shape here. Several protocol changes later adopted by Bitcoin were switched on in this network first.
That optional privacy extension prompted some regulated venues to delist the coin, even though transfers remain transparent by default.

Turnover is what the venue itself reports; we do not verify it, so the order in the table is not a reliability ranking.

We compute market cap from circulating supply, so its date matters as much as the price.
