Rank 42 by market cap
Aave is the largest venue for lending without an intermediary: depositors add assets to shared pools, borrowers draw from them against collateral, and the interest rate moves automatically with how much of a pool is currently borrowed. The project began as ETHLend, matching individual lenders and borrowers directly, before moving to the pooled design. Liquidation triggers automatically once collateral falls below its threshold and is carried out by third parties for a fee.
The maximum supply is capped at 16.0 M AAVE.
Aave is grouped under: Decentralized Finance (DeFi), Governance, Yield Farming.

Aave is ranked #42 by market capitalisation, at 2.68B $. Market capitalisation is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with both — a coin can climb the ranking without its price rising, simply by issuing more.
15.4 M AAVE are in circulation, which is 96.5 % of the declared maximum. The remainder enters the market on the schedule written into the protocol, and until it does, the circulating figure is what market capitalisation is computed from — not the cap.
Over the last twelve months the price of AAVE fell by 42.0 %. That is the change of the quote itself and says nothing about what comes next: crypto drawdowns of tens of percent within a year are ordinary, not exceptional.
Aave is a token issued on the Ethereum network rather than a coin of its own blockchain. Practically that means transfers are paid for in the network's own currency, and the token's fate is tied to that network as well as to its own project.

Its best-known invention, since copied across the industry, is the flash loan: funds are lent with no collateral on the condition that they are repaid within the same transaction, which underpins arbitrage and position refinancing. The protocol runs on many networks at once, each with its own markets and risk parameters.
The AAVE token governs the protocol and doubles as a backstop — a portion staked in the safety module can be sold off to cover a shortfall in the system. The protocol also issues its own stablecoin, GHO.
The flash loan — uncollateralised borrowing repaid inside a single transaction — originated here and is now used across the industry.

Turnover is what the venue itself reports; we do not verify it, so the order in the table is not a reliability ranking.
