The sector median covers every company in the sector on the US market, loss-making ones included.
Labcorp runs laboratory tests on a doctor's referral — one of two networks covering the whole country.
The economics of a laboratory network are about utilisation: the analyser and the logistics cost the same whatever the number of samples, so each additional specimen flows almost entirely into profit. Hence the constant fight for volume and the purchase of hospital laboratories from institutions that find outsourcing cheaper than running their own department.
Price is dictated not by the market but by insurers and government programmes: a revised fee schedule can change the profitability of a whole line. The second part of the business is running clinical trials for drug companies. Risks: reimbursement rates, competition for insurer contracts and labour costs. The company pays a dividend.
