A set of accounts consists of several statements and dozens of pages of notes. The figures are in the statements; the substance is in the notes.
What is in them
Accounting policy: the rules by which revenue is recognised, assets are valued, depreciation is charged. A change of policy can change profit without changing the business.
Related party transactions: dealings with companies affiliated with the main shareholder — Corporate governance: why a minority shareholder should care.
Debt structure: maturities, currency, rates, covenants. The statement shows only the total; the notes show when and on what terms it has to be paid.
Contingent liabilities: litigation and guarantees that have not become an expense yet but might.
Segment information: revenue and profit broken down by business line and geography.
Currency composition

The auditor's report
A separate document. A modified opinion or a qualification is a serious signal that appears nowhere in the numbers.
